Plutus Awards Partner Profile: Republic Wireless

We’re excited to welcome Republic Wireless to the Plutus Awards as the sponsor of our sweet after party! Learn more about this great company from Cherie Gary.

I believe it was Holly Johnson @ClubThrifty or perhaps it was Mr. Money Mustache @MrMoneyMustache who let us in on the secret: When it comes to getting to know… really know…the world’s savviest money savers, FinCon is the place to be. FinCon15 is the second year that Republic Wireless has been involved in the conference, and we are thrilled to recognize the hard work of so many of you as a sponsor of the Plutus Awards. It’s great to be back amongst so many friends and supporters.

From day one, Republic has been on a tireless mission to drive down the total cost of owning a smartphone by leveraging the added power of WiFi to offer the best possible pricing on smartphone plans that consumers had ever seen.

Our story

In 2011, Republic Wireless launched with an unheard of $19 all-in WiFi + cellular service plan and everyone who joined Republic Wireless from the larger carriers saved money. By 2013, the growth of WiFi made our $10 plan with limitless talk and text and data over WiFi and cellular, one of our most popular. By 2014, Consumer Reports had named Republic Wireless the best deal in pre-paid service and PC Magazine readers gave us a thumbs up for our “winning formula”, which enticed their editors to honor Republic Wireless with their Editor’s Choice award. Read more about our story here.

Our philosophy is simple: Treat our customers with respect, like people. Charge reasonable prices for service. Don’t bury important information in the fine print. Don’t play games hiding fees and building phone subsidies into monthly charges. It’s a strategy that’s working – last year we tripled our subscription base, and we are on track to do it again in 2015. And in many ways, we are just getting started.

Most recently, Republic Wireless upped the ante again – this time with a move threatening the estimated $52 billion in wireless industry profits – with new plans that refund customers dollar for dollar for unused cellular data. Thousands of customers, even some members of the FinCon community, helped us test and build our Republic Refund™ plans. With Republic Refunds, our customers averaged monthly bills of just $14.82, which represents a 31% savings vs. what these same customers were paying before.

The power of you

We are so grateful for the support of the FinCon community – everything that you do helps us cost effectively spread the word and pass along the savings. We don’t engage in most forms of traditional advertising, so each review, comment, and social post from this community usually elicits a cheer from our team in Raleigh and me in Dallas. From PT, Mr. Money Mustache (an early adopter who “got it” immediately), Budgets Are Sexy (how we love you J$, let us count the ways!) the awesome team at Clark Howard, Debt Round Up, Don’t Waste the Crumbs, Money Manifesto, Adam Hagerman, Bible Money Matters, Cash Cow Couple, Club Thrifty (thank you seems inadequate…Holly was our go to resource when we were just babes in the world of bloggers), to The College Investor, Femme Frugality, Johnny Moneyseed (Chipotle on us – forever!) Retire by 40, The Wealth Gospel (Ben Luthi is so smart. Hope he is enjoying his new gig at NerdWallet) and many more. It doesn’t stop at reviews. We are in awe of the awesome efforts of the team behind Phroogal and their Road to Financial Wellness tour. To all, thank you, thank you, thank you!
